Severfield-Reeve Projects were excited to welcome The Bishop of Durham to the site of Darlington’s All Saints Church to lay the foundation stone for the new church.

Severfield-Reeve Projects and the Bishop, Rt Reverend N.T. Wright were joined by the Church’s vicar John Dobson, the Mayor Councillor Ian Hazeldine and members of the church’s congregation. The laying of the stone marks an important landmark of the church’s build which is due to be complete in time for Christmas this year. The original church was demolished to make way for the new structure which is the first parish church to be built in Darlington for over fifty years.

Severfield-Reeve has been involved with the project from the beginning playing an important part in the fundraising process, working with the church’s committee and vicar. Conceptual designs were presented to the church to explain the proposal in detail and assist with raising funds which came from the church’s own congregation.

Speaking at the ceremony The Bishop, Rt Reverend N.T. Wright commented:

“It is a wonderful project and it’s been I’ve been hugely excited to hear about it from the beginning. This is the first time I’ve seen the framework and it’s a sign that new things are happening.”

On replacing the previous structure, The Bishop continued:

“It was a fairly modern church and so it was easier to demolish than older ones which are listed buildings, even though it would be a jolly good thing to do with some of them. Now we are being creative, the old one served its purpose and we are building a new one.”

Lindsay Ross, Managing Director of Severfield-Reeve Projects adds:

“With the project being funded by the church’s congregation we feel an extra sense of responsibility to those who will benefit from the project. Today was a great chance to meet those involved and see their reaction to the work. We are used to designing and building an array of structures but it is always interesting to work on original projects such as this. ”

John Dobson, Vicar at All Saints Church commented:

“The team at Severfield-Reeve have been fantastic. Once we saw the steel go up we could see the outline of the structure and gives it an amazing impact, like a sketch in the sky.”

The new All Saints Church will be completed for the beginning of December, in time for Christmas. The Bishop will return to bless the church in Spring 2009.
